about

This song was commissioned by the University of Alberta as part of Dr. Olive Yonge's research of women in leadership. Through interviewing 88 female administrators of 16 Canadian post secondary institutions, the research team sought to examine how female administrators define courage and its relevancy to their work in the academy. One participant described courage as having "glacial persistence" which became the inspiration for this song. All of the lyrics of Glacier are based on transcripts of the interviews. Glacier illustrates the triumphs and trials of being a woman in academia.

lyrics

I feel smaller than I was yesterday
Look myself in the mirror and say I’ll be okay
It takes courage to see through these doors
To find a way, to find a way

I’m the only one who has walked this road
You can't tell me what it’s like
I got this feeling in my heart and in my song
I know that this is right, I know that this is right

You can laugh and resist me
Barriers coming down heavy
But I’m a glacier just you wait
I will change this landscape

I will listen to the unknown and take the risks I choose
Some days it would be easier if I was bullet proof
I wish I was bullet proof

Others say they fear me because I stand my ground
Breathing confidence to these bones
Strong and proud, I stand strong and proud

You can laugh and resist me
Barriers coming down heavy
But I’m a glacier just you wait
I will change this landscape

I am not invisible
I sit right at your table
Look and hear me now
Our anthem will resound

You can laugh and resist me
Barriers coming down heavy
But we are glaciers just you wait
We will change this landscape
